Not all contractors are right for all contracts.

Choosing the right contractor for your project should be of the utmost importance, and having to deal with a contractor who cannot perform the task, one who will not show up, or one who takes entirely too long is very frustrating. Look for a contractor who has the specific skills and experience to perform your project to your expectations. Ask to see his work and talk to his customers. You may want to query his suppliers or talk to his banker.

Question him about his bidding process, about dispute resolution, how he handles "extras" and "change orders." He should be willing to spend the necessary time researching the job and trying to find the right materials and subcontractors. He should supply you with a detailed description of the work he is to perform, including material and finish descriptions and start and completion dates.

The building process can take months. I know from experience that the process can become stressful for all parties involved. Your contractor should also be someone you feel you can enter into a professional relationship with for an extended period of time.
